Katherine Lacelle is a Saskatoon-born emerging dance artist and choreographer based in Toronto. Her practice is rooted in collaborative exploration, using movement to connect personal experiences with a broader human landscape. Katherine’s diverse training across Western dance forms has instilled a deep value for an attuned body. Lacelle has performed in contemporary works by Lukas Malkowski, Julia Cratchley, and Louis Laberge-Côté, and is currently in process with Jera Wolfe and Kimberley Cooper. This year, she presented choreography at the Arts and Letter Club, Fever After Dark, and Common Ground Dance Showcase. She works closely with Kennedy Elder as a choreographic and production assistant with 306 Elite Dance Company and is a company member of 306 Toronto Dance Company. Katherine holds a BFA in Performance Dance from Toronto Metropolitan University. Alongside her movement practice, she explores photography, fashion, and design as complementary creative practices that shape and refine her unique artistic lens.

Movement is essential to my being -
like soil, water, and sun to a plant,
it sustains me,
fuels my curiosity, my discipline,
my hunger to keep learning.
My movement is not a substitute for my voice -
It is an extension of it.
My artistic voice is the song my body sings.
Through physicality and creative liberty,
I reach emotions,
answer questions,
arrive at insights
that deepen my understanding of myself,
of others,
of this world.

I am endlessly curious
about the human self -
what a body carries, what it releases -
and I find my answers in others.
Timing, breath, proximity, touch, and weight -
each one a language of relationship,
each one a question about people.
Through collaboration I listen, respond, and learn
from perspectives beyond my own.
What happens when we meet in motion,
and how, changed by each other,
we come to know
what we carried all along.

I will not pretend there is only beauty.
It is demanding.
At times, it causes immense grief.
But the dark,
the grit,
make it rich.
I try to hold this,
alongside the joy,
because both belong to a life spent moving.

Still, I keep exploring -
Rooting myself in the soil I'm blessed to sink in,
Willing,
Curious,
And sensitive
to the aliveness of the world around.
